                      SEARCHING FOR DIRT
                           April 18 – May 2nd, 2009

Riders:
John Biehn – Stretch
Todd Raskin – Cobra Monkey
Tim Terrio – Jem’
John Biehn – Jeon Beon

Sat 4/18

Left from JFK on Delta Airlines at 9:00 am.  Arrived Salt Lake City at 1:00pm.  Stretch met us at the airport and gave us a lift to BMW Salt Lake,
215 N. Redwood Rd
in North Salt Lake 801-936-4600.   Arrived at dealership around 1:45pm and packed up the bikes.  Charlie Goodman came and joined us for the short ride to Park City.

Rode Immigration out of Salt Lake onto I-80 and into Park City. Lauch/dinner at The Bar With No Name.  Buffalo burgers and beers.  Grocery shopping and package store afterwards.  Checked into the Minors Club at 7:45pm, 3 bedrooms, room #106.  Nice hot tub, drinks and then bed at 11:30pm

Mileage: 65

Sun 4/19

Up early – Beautiful outside but on the cool side.
Ate breakfast in town at the Eating Establishment.
Headed toward Heber and tried to get on Route 35 but the Wolf Creek pass was closed due to snow!

Headed East on Route 40. Once near starvation reservoir the temperature started to drop.  Temperature really dropped at the summit and there was lots of snow on the ground.  Looked like February and I think it was in the upper 30’s, love my heated grips.  At Duchesne South on Route 191 scenery was absolutely beautiful and the road was a 10.  Through the town of Herper which was a real “shit hole”.  Route 191/6 in Price down to Green River.  Nothing to see other then the Beckwith Plateau.  I-70 for 45 minutes back onto Route 191 into Moab.

Arrived Moab at 5:30pm. Found a secluded campsite off of
Kane Creek Rd.
Set up camp then back into town for dinner.  Ate at the Moab Brewery.  Back to campsite for fire and drinks.  Long day and everyone is tired.  Lights out at 11:30pm.

Mon 4/20

Shafer Trail

Up at 6:30am mountain weather, no sun in the canyon yet but it looks like it’s going to be a perfect day!  Packed up and headed into town for a large breakfast at Jailhouse Café.  I had the most wonderful egg Florentine!

Set up camp at the Canyon Lands Campground.  With no gear on the bikes they felt light and we were looking forward toward a day of adventure.

Headed south to the Canyon Lands NP and took the Shafer Trail (backwards, ended at the top).  Took us over 3 hours.   Road was all dirt and pretty easy except in a few spots, namely the switch backs towards the end.

Drove to the end at Grand View and the road has lots of S turns on level paved terrain.  After coming off the dirt we all had lots of fun.

Back into Moab for dinner at the Moab Brewery.

Mileage: 120 but it took us about 5.2 hours or more!
“Not the distance, but time in the saddle that counts”.
Fire at the campsite and drinks

Lights out 11:30pm

Tue 4/21

Breakfast at the Love Muffin where we all enjoyed a wonderful breakfast.  At 10:30am we hit the road and headed up to the La Sal Mountains.  First we checked out Slick Rock and Stretch road a short distance on the petrified dunes as we watched.
Jem’ had his pants down around his ankles while we stood in the heat watching.

Took Sand
Flats Road
and past Fins and Things; a famous jeep trail that my Uncle Charlie spoke about.  The road was dirt but in great shape.  Climbed high into the La Sal’s so temperature was fantastic! Even snow still on the ground in places.  Went right past Castle Rock on the way down.

Next route was Onion Creek and what a surprise.  Fantastic dirt road with great views and about 20 river crossings.  We all had a ball.  Took some nice pictures of the Fisher Towers.  Back to campsite on Route 128 which follows the Colorado River right into Moab.  Got back into town at 6:15pm.

Called and arranged for a Hummer Tour!
The Hummer came right to our campsite and we four wheeled for the next 2 hours.  Amazed at what the Hummer could do!
We went up Hells and Things and Devils Backbone, I just about shit myself!

Dinner afterwards at the Moab Brewery where both Stretch and I had a terrible pork chop dinner.   Back at the campground by 10:30pm.  No fire, just sat around and looked at maps, talked about what’s next, looks like we might be moving on!

Mileage: 150
Picture perfect day.

Wed 4/22

Another perfect day!  Deep blue sky and already warm.
I was up at 7:15am and got the coffee on.  Decided that it’s time to move on and head to the Dark Mountains.
You know how it goes; “A good traveler can never stay in one place too lone”.  Broke camp at 9:45am and headed South on 191.  Got sick of being on the highway and decided to try some back roads.  Took the
North Flats Road
off of the Looking Glass exit.  Wonderful dirt road with nothing in sight from miles around, just wide open range country.

Onto 211 where we stopped at Newspaper Park, 11:35am.
Stretch showed us some of his favorite climbing spots down the road.  Turned around on 211, back tracked to
Jackson Spring Rd/Harts Road
that climbed up into the Black Mountains at  9,000 feet.  Still snow on the ground and the temperature started to drop way down.  We decided that it was much to cold to explore these mountains so we headed south to Monticello.  Now this is a sleepy town and I don’t now why anyone in there right mind would live here.

Cobra Monkey found a nice spot to eat with his gps.  Lunch at the Ranch Cookhouse, now 1:20pm.  It was there grand opening week.  We all ate enormous hamburgers, except Jem’ he ate a buffalo burger.  Cobra Monkey and I shared a home made cherry cobbler pie with ice cream on top, it was to die for and it left both of us with great memories! Thank you for sharing, Cobra Monkey.

Stretch spotted a nice route heading south on
Montezuma Road
.  40 some odd miles of real off road riding.  We rode past old Anasazi ruins and also some new ones at the price of $900,000 !  Lots of dust, thank god for the buffs. Very difficult and technical riding, some of the hardest we’ve done thus far.  Took us all day to ride down into the little cranky town of Bluff.
We all looked like sugar donuts by the time we stopped.   We were covered in mud and dust from head to toe!  That Montezuma road is a must for any gs rider, absolutely beautiful.
Checked the town out which took all of 4 minutes and set up camp at the Cottonwood Campground, now 7:00pm.

Set up tents and walked to some outdoor steak house. We all had a very disappointing steak but it still filled our stomachs.  The owner gave us suggestions for tomorrow’s route.

Jem’ and I made a beer run to the K&C store.  Back to the site for drinks and coffee.

Lights out 11:30pm

Mileage: 150-190 one hard ass day.

Favorite parts of the day:

Jem’ – Being out in the middle of nowhere, not seeing anyone around.

Me- Watching 2 wild horses running at full speed along side of me.

Cobra Monkey- Loved the entire trail, loved how “scarey” it was!

Stretch- Right when we came down lower part of the trail, when the landscape changed and there were rolling hills; before the deep sand.

Thu 4/23

Woke at 7:30am to yet another picture perfect day.  Cool morning but as soon as the sun came up it warmed right up.  Broke camp at 9:30am, left gear at site so we traveled light (like an Indian)  Took off on Route 162 then onto 262.

10:00am stopped for breakfast at the Mussi Café in Montezuma Creek.  A real shit hole but as Cobra said; “it smells clean”. With that said, we all felt better.  After an enormous breakfast we were back in the saddle.  Reached 4 Corners by high noon.
Flat, flat country and you can see for miles in every direction.

After a photo shoot and shopping we took off back to Bluff.  Gassed up in Bluff, now 1:45pm.  Route 163 to Valley of the Gods, 2:45pm.

Stretch had to take a shit so we waited for him.  Unfortunately for him, he shit his in his underwear.  Needless to say he was very uncomfortable the rest of the day without underwear. A wise man once said; “he who shits himself will ride alone”.

Valley of the Gods road was a blast but very hot, hot, hot!
Then back on Route 261 to the top of the Moki Dugway, now 4:05pm.  On the very top we turned left onto
Muley Point Road
.  Terrible road with lots of sand and washboards.  The road had everything that you “don’t” want on a road.  My GPS shuck off of my mount and smashed onto the street.

Got to see the Muley Overlook and what a view!  Stretch and Cobra Monkey did some scouting around on the rocks on their own while Jem’ and I took in the grandeur of it all.  High, high winds on the overlook, probably 40+ mph and gusty.

Back to the lovely town of Bluff, now 6:23pm.   Dinner at San Juan River Kitchen.  Back to K&C store for beer and supplies.  Nice fire and drinks, all very tired.
Lights out 10:00pm

Mileage; 130-150?

Favorite parts of the day:

Jem’- The Moki Dugway, not too crazy. “It is something that I’ve always wanted to do”.

Me – Being in the middle of nowhere on the way to Four Corners, “Big Sky Country”  Nowhere……. is where it’s at!

Cobra Monkey- The up and down hills, “goose bumps” on the dirt road in the Valley of the Gods.

Stretch-  Last half of the Valley of the Gods road.
Cobra yells, “hit that jump”.

Fri 4/24

High winds woke me up in the middle of the night, sounded like a train coming at me.  Finally got up at 6:45am and made coffee.  Broke camp at 9:15am, looks like another nice, hot day.

Topped off our tanks at K&C.   Back onto 163 but stopped for coffee and breakfast at The Coffee House in Bluff.  I bought a beautiful Navajo painting there for the Bear’s Den.   Breakfast was painfully slow but very good.  Left Coffee House at 11:00am and headed to Monument Valley.

Arrived Monument Valley at 12:26pm.  Paid our fee and I had to cover up my beer that was exposed on my luggage rack.
Very, very difficult riding.  The wind was blowing so hard that a lot of the road was covered with a fine, baby powder like sand.
At times it was a total blackout and you couldn’t wee your hand in front of your face.  Jem’ and I finally lowered our tire pressure to 30 lbs and it seemed to help a lot.  We were all covered with dust and sand and the winds had to be blowing over 45mph.  We finally left “hell” and made a stop a Gouldings Trading Post, now 2:30pm.

A Gouldings I bought a cool quiver and Monument Valley cap.
Put air in our tires using the little air pump I brought and we finally left Gouldings at 4:15pm and headed west to Lake Powell.  Off on 316 N to 261, the high winds were crazy and it made riding very tiring and difficult.   Over the ever impressive Moki Dugway again.

Route 95-276, still getting hammered by the wind!  Finally after many hours we made it to Halls Crossing and just before dark, 6:55pm.   Did not have to pay an entrance fee because it was too early in the season.  Camped right there at the campgrounds.  Tried to find food but no luck, everything was closed.  Dinner looked like my warm beer and freeze dry.  Parked our bikes and walked to the bathroom to hide next to the wall to escape the wind!

Met a really nice family from Colorado.  Because they saw the condition we were in and that we only had warm beer and freeze dry food the guy asked if we wanted some food.  So I said, “if you have any extra food that would be great”.  With that being said he gave us steaks, elk sausage, potato salad, brownies and more.  We really lucked out.  Then on top of that the guy I met down by the docks brought us an ice cold 12 pack of beer.  We were all in shock and very appreciative of such nice gestures from complete strangers.   “The kindness of strangers”.   No fire tonight because of the wind.  Maybe tomorrow we can escape this wind?

Favorite parts of the day:

Jem’- Taking air out of my tires and riding in the sand.

Me-
Goulding Trading Place
, found it very interesting.

Cobra Monkey- Monument Valley, I liked it more then I thought I would.

Stretch- The steak dinner the strangers gave us.

We all agree, that today was full of highlights!

Mileage: 180+

Sat 4/25

Up at 6:30am, high winds all night; will it ever stop?
Lake Powell looks beautiful this morning.  Cool out and I am wearing my lightweight down jacket but I have shorts on.  Making coffee in this wind is interesting!

Broke camp at 8:45am and gassed up at Halls Crossing.
We waited for 1 hour for Captain Dave to give us a ride on his ferry to the other side, Bull Frog.  Arrived Bull Frog at 10:25am.

Tried to get something to eat at the Anasazi Restaurant but no luck, too early.  Left with empty stomach.

10:45am headed to the Burr Trail.   Started out paved then gravel then dirt with some dried up river crossings.  Tight switch backs on dirt/gravel.  No one around!  Weather started to look bad, dark clouds, looks like rain possibly snow.

I spotted some cowboys heading along side of the rode.  I waved them over to talk to me.  After I did that I was not so sure it was a good thing.  Chewing tobacco and drinking bud at 11:00am, I pulled my buff down from around my mouth and yelled, “what do you think about the weather”.  I waved Jem’ down to come up next to me incase I need some reinforcements.   With Jem’ looking pretty gnarly in his well worn leathers I felt somewhat relieved.   Well, the tall thin guy that looked about as weathered as the bad weather coming in spit his chew, drank his bud and said; “I’ve been working up here all my life, you ain’t got no problems, go fur-it”.  We said are farewells, pulled our buffs over ours mouths and took off.
With that being said we felt confident to continue.  Got to the top near the gulch and the temperature really dropped.   It got really dark and began to rain then began to sleet! No place to hide from the weather we were fully exposed.  Stopped to put on more clothes and rode on towards Boulder.
Reached Boulder at 2:30pm and found a nice “warm” restaurant with a pellet stove.  The Mesa Restaurant.
We all ate a large lunch then back on the road.

Wind picked up and hammered us going through the Grand Staircase Escalante.  At one point I thought Cobra Monkey was going to get blown right off the road!  Finally arrived the sleepy town of Escalante, now 5:00pm.  Checked out the Escalante Outfitters so I could buy some Vodka.  Got a 2 bedroom honeymoon suite at the Cowboy Inn.  Too windy and too tired to camp.  We were told that campers could not keep their tents down and many we being just blown away.

Dinner at the Cowboy Clue Restaurant.   This restaurant was not a hard decision because it was the only joint in town that served alcohol.  Big meal then off to get beer at the gas station.

Back to our cozy honeymoon suite to watch our movies and view pictures on the TV.

The Burr Trail was 80 miles long and I would love to do it again.
I can’t tell you how Jem’ and I dreamed of riding the Burr Trail.

Favorite parts of the day:
Jem’ – Switchbacks on the Burr Trail, I really did not expect that.
Me- Switchbacks on the Burr Trail and seeing that incredible landscape in the Grand Staircase, wow!
Cobra Money- The whole second half of the Burr Trail, “ I thought it was beautiful”.
Stretch- The Spine at first but I thought the second half was cool.

Saying of the day:
“True That”

Mileage:  108

Sun 4/26

It was nice sleeping in a hotel for a change and I woke at 7:30am.  Looks cold and cloudy out, I’m not sure about the wind at this point.

Left hotel at 9:20am and went straight for breakfast, maps and information at the Outfitters.  Excellent breakfast and our waitress, Sarah was very nice. After breakfast Cobra Monkey had to run back to the hotel because he forgot his Buff!

Temperature outside is on the cool side, probably mid 50’s cloudy and gray.  40% chance of rain.  Off to the Visitors Center for more maps and info.  Found out that the Hole in the Rock was closed, search and rescue looking for a lost boy.  We changed our plains and went for Hells Backbone.

Nice dirt road in good shape with few washboards and dust not too bad.  We took a side road to check out Posey Lake, now 11:45am.  It began to flurry and it got colder, winter like.
Another side trip on Forest Road 145 and we are now over 9,000 ft.  Cobra Monkey tipped over on his bike while coming to a stop on the Upper Death Access!

At 3:45pm we reached the Spine, truly spectacular views from the Hells Backbone Bridge.  Another side road after taking pictures on Forest Rd 544 – had to turn around when we hit snow – cold, more snow! WTF.

Found a few dirt mounds to play on approximately 15-20 feet in height.  Good spot for a photo shoot.  I managed to take a pretty nasty fall!  With everyone’s help we managed to pull the bike down and off of the mound.  No injuries, thank god and the bike was ok.

Back on the road after cleaning myself off.  Route 12 on the
Hogsback Road
is truly amazing.  Now without wind we can all take a good look around.  This road was built in 1940 by the CCC.

Quick stop at the Canyon Country Store for supplies and back to our cozy honeymoon suite, 4:30pm.  Stretch and Cobra Monkey cleaned their chains and then went out and did some local exploring.

Pizza and Beer dinner back at the Outfitters.

Lights out 10:30pm

Favorite parts of the day:

Jem’- Up in the trees and the snow!

Cobra Monkey – The 2nd side trip- State 544, it was beautiful back there.

Stretch- The trails at the end of the day! Fun factor was high.

Me- The views from the Hells Backbone Bridge

Mileage: 91

Mon 4/27

Left our headquarters at 9:15am.  I was up again at 7:15am making coffee and writing.  Straight for breakfast at the Outfitters and our waitress Sarah was there waiting for us with hot coffee and a smile.

Left Outfitters at 9:55am and got gas at Phillips 66 right in town.  At 10:10am we entered the Grand Escalante, National Monument Staircase, State 252.

The next 26.5 miles was pure hell.  Wash Boards after wash boards, deep, deep sand, gravel, mud, quick sand, you name it and we had it.  Took a left onto Dry Fork Trail Head and rode on an even worse rode for another 1.7 miles.  Finally arrived at 12:00pm and we were already exhausted.  Changed into shorts, locked clothes onto our bikes, put suntan lotion on grabbed water and we were off.

First of the 3 slot cannons that we did was Peekaboo.  It had a very interesting start to say the least.  I let Stretch go first then he gave me a hand up.  Afterward we walked for sometime until we found the entrance of Spooky.  Spooky was really cool and I wanted to rename it Scary!  After Spooky we hiked for quit a long time through Dry Fork at Coyote Gulch.  After walking that seemed like forever and in deep sand mind you we reached the Brimstone. (Jem’ found an arrow head) Cobra Monkey played in the sand dunes.   In the guide book they say Brimstone is impossible to go all the way through it. They also mentioned that a guy was stuck for 8 days.  Now Brimstone should be called Crazy!
I’ve never been is such a tight slot cannon.  We literally had to lie on our sides and crawl.  Jem’ let me borrow his headlight to lead the way.  It took us a good 45 minutes to reach the subway.  We turned around there because Cobra Monkey spotted a baby Rattlesnake!   All the way back to the entrance and a long hot hike out, probably 6 miles.

Finally reached our bikes at 6:00pm.  I was exhausted and not looking forward to that shitty ride out.  Quick stop at Sinclair’s for that well deserved 12 pack of Budweiser, now 8:00pm.

No alcohol served at the Mexican Restaurant so we decided to go back to Cowboy Blues.   Our waitress Natalie was wonderful and very helpful.  The owner of our hotel was worried about us because we didn’t show back up at the hotel.  She came looking for us and finally found us here at the Cowboy Blues.

Tired, dirty and stuffed not to mention 3 pictures of beer we left for our head quarters, now 9:55pm.

Favorite parts of the day:

Jem’- All 3 (tree) slots were great, totally different.

Cobra Monkey- When in Brimstone and I thought we were done and then Jeon Beon kept going! Amazing.

Stretch- Watching Cobra Monkey running down the sand dune, so free, so happy…….

Me- Crawling through Brimstone was crazy scary.

Tue 4/28

Up late, 8:30am – Mountain morning, looks great outside.
Sore from yesterdays ordeal.  Packed up the bikes and left our head quarters at 10:25am.  Quick trip to Wells Fargo for cash. then off for breakfast at the Golden Loop Café.

Finished our huge breakfast at 11:35am and said our goodbyes to our waitress Laura.  Gassed up then to the visitors center for road information.  Left center at 12:15pm and got onto Route 12 heading West.  High winds beat up on us for the next hour.  In Cannoville we got onto the
Skutumpah Road
past Rainbow Point and Pink Cliffs.  Went all the way to Glendale.  Beautiful dirt road, very interesting.  Could see the south side of Bryce Canyon.  Arrived into Glendale at 4:25pm.  Spent several hours on the dirt road but is was lots of fun, except towards the end when wash boards appeared.

Reached pavement finally on I-89 then 9 West.   Quick stop at gift shop for coffee but nobody there to help us so we left.  5:45pm arrived Zion.  Beautiful ride through the park, $12.00 entrance fee.

Into town for coffee and beer at Oscars.  7:00pm set up head quarters at the South Campground site #30 with 2 running streams, perfect. Cobra thinks he has Swine Flu?  We are all starting to worry about his strange behavior.
Dinner at the Bit and Spur Saloon.  Back to our site after a quick stop for wood and Cobra wanted to buy hand sanitizer.  Sat around a smoky fire, 9:55pm.

Lights out 11:30pm

Mileage: 125

Favorite parts of the day:

Jem’-  I liked breaking camp and moving on

Cobra Monkey- I liked the whole
Skutumpah Road

Stretch- The beginning of Skutumpah

Me- Running into those 2 guys on quads in the middle of nowhere. Total strangers, instant friends.
Adventure in common instantly bonds us!

Wed  4/29

Up at 6:45am – burr cold, made coffee and wrote while everyone was sleeping.  Froze my ass off for the next two hours waiting for the sun to reach us in the valley.  Off for breakfast in town, ate at Wildcat Willies.  Finished and headed back to our head quarters at 10:30am.

We decided not to ride today and that we would hike instead.
Angels Landing was our target.  To make it ever a little harder we left during the hottest time of the day, 11:45am.   We all reached the summit in 1.45min, long hot hike but we made it with relative ease.  Except for a few very exposed areas that were totally freaky.   Took the public bust to the hotel and drank beer on the nice green lawn under a shade tree.  Stretch and Cobra topped it off with an ice cream.  Made it back to our new head quarters at 4:55pm.

Cleaned up the best we could without a shower and went into town for dinner at Oscars.  Before we ate we made a quick pit stop for the necessary provisions for later that evening; beer and vodka.

Back to camp before dark, 8:00pm.  Stretch made a nice fire and we started pouring drinks and sipping on nice cool beer.
Cobra Monkey made a cooler out of a garbage bag.  I think we retired around 11:30pm-12A?
Favorite parts of the day:

Jem’- Same as Cobra Monkey
Cobra Monkey- That hike was awesome
Stretch- The hottie on the trail
Me- The scary sections on Angels Landing, love it!

Thu 4/30

Woke at 7:00am and the high winds are back *&B$#@
Making coffee was difficult because of it.  Broke camp at 9:45am and went right to the Shell station in town to get some gas and air in our tires.

Breakfast afterwards at the Pioneer Restaurant.  Finished breakfast at 11:15am and on the road.  Stopped at the gift shop going through Zion so Jem’ could by his women a gift.
9 East to 89 N – Winds strong but I thing we are all getting use to it.  89N through the Dixie National Forest is very scenic, lush valleys and beautiful horse country.

Stopped in the historic town of Panguitch for coffee and to do a little shopping.  This town is surrounded by the most beautiful mountains with views of the colorful Aquarius Plateau.  Checked out the old cowboy stores and antiques for the next hour.  Left town at 1:35pm and arrived into Salina at 5:20pm.
Gassed up in Salina and met Gilies who was riding his motorcycle to South America all the way from Montréal.

A long and dangerous ride into Mt. Pleasant and we checked into the Horseshoe Mountain Lodge, room #25 for $80.00, now 7:35pm.  Did not unpack went right to dinner.  Little problem trying to find a nice restaurant.  Finally found an ok Italian restaurant called Cavalier Pizza.  Beth was our waitress, only 18 married with a 15 month  old, Beth III.  She looked 15 years old, not even old enough to drink.

Back to our rooms after dinner to just chill and pour drinks.

Lights out 11:00pm

Mileage: 239
Favorite parts of the day:

Jem’- The little town of Panguitch, pretty cool
Cobra Monkey- Dinner last night with Beth, that was fun.
Stretch- Meeting Gilies – Heading to South America
Me- I liked riding the beginning part of 89N – loved the green valleys and all of the horses and cows.

Fri 5/01

Up at 7:00am, made coffee inside of our hotel room.  Slept well, felt good to take a hot shower.  Cloudy and cool out – possible rain.

Left hotel at 9:30am, stopped for breakfast at 9:45am in Fairview at Home Plate Café. Our waitress Abie was really cute!
No Rain! Wind not too bad.  Got near Spanish Fork at 11:15am.  I-89 to Heber in Provo Cannon, route 40 E and a quick stop at the Rangers Station in Uinta to see if the mountain pass is open, now 12:30pm and the pass was closed due to snow.  Emigration Canyon into Salt Lake, traffic sucked and so do the drivers.  12 West and arrived BMW North at 2:45pm.

Went to U-Haul place downtown and picked up Stretches trailer.  Back to dealership to load his bike.  Off to hotel near the Salt Lake airport, Marriott Springhill Suites.  Unhitched Stretches U-Haul then went out for dinner and drinks at the Bayou.
Dancing afterwards at the club at Green Streets in the
Trolley Square
.  Had a really, really good time….maybe too good!
Stretch did a great job getting us all back to the hotel safely.

Lights out ?

Sat 5/2

Stretch gave us a ride to the airport.  Flight left Salt Lake at 8:50am – non stop back into JFK.

Trip Over – but the memories will never be.
